Would it not take longer to remove the suspect backlinks, and let Google recrawl these links and update the rankings?

Yes this was kind of a unique case because the links originated from a single website post that was then picked up by a bot site, which created thousands of links over a period of just a few months. The owner of the website had no idea that this was happening but it stood out like a sore thumb to me when I looked at the backlink history.
As soon as the original link was removed, the bot links disappeared within days and the traffic returned a few days after that.
