If you are a small or local business there is a cheap and cost effective way of getting your business to appear on Google’s organic search results called Google My Business (formally known as Google Places and Google Local).

A lot of small businesses find it difficult to engage in a SEO campaign against other multi-national companies already listed on page 1 due to highly competitive SEO strategies.  What Google My Business does is display your business to users in and around your location, which means that if you have a business in Northern Ireland you will appear to users who search from this location and you will appear on a map listing local companies.  You don’t even need to have a website to get listed.

As you can see from the snapshot above businesses have their address and contact numbers listed as well as a link to their Google Plus page and a link to reviews left by customers.

How to get listed

If you would like to add your business or claim ownership of an account that already exists you will need to go to www.google.com/business/ and sign in with any Google account that you have i.e. your Gmail or Analytics etc.  If you do not have one of these you can create a new one by clicking on the ‘Get On Google’ button.

Once this has been done you then need to click on the button ‘Get Your Page’, which will lead you to another screen asking you to choose a business type.

Please Note: If you select Brand you will not appear on the local map.  At present this can not be switched once the account has been created so I would advise selecting Storefront or Service area.

After you select either Storefront or Service area you will be presented with a search bar to find your business if it already exists.  If none of the listings match you should then click on the ‘None of these match – Add your business’ button.   You can then fill out the details of your business as shown below.
